Drive-in Movie at Home

If it is anything like at my house, you get an Amazon box or two at least once a week. We always recycle them but I'm always looking for other ways to reuse them first. We've done the color a box activity and we've used them to make forts but I was really excited when this idea was brought to my attention by a friend!

This month with our MOMS Club, we participated in their January social which was an indoor drive-in movie for the children. The "cars" were actually large boxes decorated like little cars. Every child was asked to bring one box and everyone brought in a variety of supplies to build the cars. We had black paper plates for the wheels and white paper plates and round-head fasteners for the steering wheels. The kids were given construction paper to create headlights for their car and any other decorative item they wanted like license plates or bumper stickers. We also provided several different colors of tape for racing stripes and a whole slew of coloring tools such as crayons and markers.

Each child was able to create their own car for the drive-in movie. We had taped "parking spots" on the ground for each car to park for the movie. Each kid was able to choose a snack for the movie from our shared snack table and then it was time for the movie to begin. For our event, we chose Frosty the Snowman for the movie to be shown.

The kids loved having their own space for the movie.

It was a great way to get kids to be creative and imaginative when building their cars. It was also neat to see how the other kids of various ages decorated their cars and for them to gather ideas from their peers in how to "make" their cars.

Our car went home with us and was played with the rest of the day around the house. Boxes can great for open-ended play. What other ways have you used boxes to get your kids playing and being creative?
